Del Kathryn Barton (b. 1972) is celebrated as one of Australia's leading contemporary artists. Based in Sydney, she has won Australia's most prestigious portrait painting prize - the Archibald Prize - on two occasions. Her work reflects the mixed mediums across which she practices, using complexly layered, vibrant techniques and colours to invoke a sense of euphoric, inimitable expression.
Barton’s ambitious debut solo London exhibition, of her own nature, will present a new suite of major paintings. Each work will exist as its own entity, containing unique figures with their own individual states of being. Notions of femininity, creation, and the divinity of the cosmos will be presented and interrogated within Barton’s show.
As the artist furthers: "female-presenting figures rise from bodies of water as phoenixes from fire, surrounded by fantastical flora and fauna, as they arrive in their authentic, full life force". These pieces will collectively, "explode with feminine power and vibrate with intoxicating details that sanctify the works.… providing a triumphant, visual onslaught that teeters on the line between jubilation and immense vanquishing."
