SARAI Gallery (SARADIPOUR)

As part of SARAI’s Karavan Projects, a dual presentation of paintings and drawings by Iranian artists Moslem Khezri and Abbas Nasle Shamloo that echoes the poetic elegance and symbolic significance of Noor as both a physical and divine light by envisioning scenes under eclipse illumination.

Featuring a selection of figurative works from Khezri’s series and landscapes by Nasle Shamloo.

These artists belong to the same generation of Iranian painters and their art shares several traits; their works are testimony to each artist’s mastery of painting and drawing media; Khezri and Nasle Shamloo are also sensitive observers who share a preference for restrained color palettes and a sense of compositional focus and order reminiscent of great Iranian filmmakers.

Most interestingly, while the subjects might differ, muted natural light and the way its presence is reflected in each artist’s form and concept, play a dominant role in defining the space quality and overall mood of the paintings. This is the kind of sensitivity that one can hardly encounter in contemporary painting today.

Figurative southern artist Moslem Khezri is represented by two series of works. His paintings and drawings from “We Keep reviewing” depict various empty and populated scenes of an all-boys school in Tehran, each sensitively staged with narrow, autumnal sunlight that highlights the tenderness of youth and evanescence of memory. Thanks to his first-hand experience with the educational environment, these images ultimately transcend time and location to become visual playfields for schoolboys’ figures to interact with and transform their spaces.

Nasle Shamloo, on the other hand, addresses our modern alienation from nature. His green, cloudy, and mysterious landscapes are characterized by a significant dual absence: human figures and sunlight; a fact that quiets the scenes and lends a timeless aspect to them. Nasle Shamloo’s imagined nature is built upon visual memory and many layers of creation and destruction: beautiful, elegant landscapes with an undertone of absence and yearning.

About the Hosts

SARAI Gallery (SARADIPOUR)

SARAI Gallery (SARADIPOUR)

SARAI Gallery (SARADIPOUR) is a contemporary gallery specializing in Middle Eastern art. Founded by Hassan Saradipour in 2018, SARAI serves as a platform to showcase emerging and established regional talents including Iranian and Pakistani artists internationally by organizing exhibitions and joint events, and publishing works by artists. Moreover, since 2020, our gallery has introduced Khor Art Initiative, an annual art prize for local artists, reviewed by a high-profile international jury.

SARAI Gallery has appeared at top art fairs around the world, including Art Dubai 2020, 2021, and 2023 (Announced), The Armory Show 2021-22, KIAF 2021-22, Untitled Art Miami Beach 2022, Expo Chicago 2023 (Announced), and Art Brussels 2023 (Announced) among others, making it one of the youngest galleries to appear on such competitive platforms, representing for the first time talented artists virtually unknown outside of their home country. SARAI Gallery was honored to win the Presents Booth Prize during the Armory Show in September 2021 and has been the sole gallery representing Middle Eastern presence in South Korean-based international art fairs for the past few years.

SARAI Gallery's main exhibition space is located in Mahshahr, Iran, where we host shows throughout the year. Mahshahr is an ancient port city in southern Iran and Hassan Saradipour's childhood home. As an arts-and-culture establishment, we chose this location over bustling metropolises not only for maritime transport but, more importantly, because we care about engaging both artists and audiences on a local level, and we believe decentralization is a key aspect in representing the rich and diverse cultures and ethnicities within the region.

At SARAI Gallery, we have defined two main projects to serve our vision: Pasitigris Projects focuses on artists coming from southern cultures, and under Karavan Projects, SARAI organizes collaborative shows with selected galleries and institutions at home, particularly in Tehran, as well as in major art capitals across the globe including Cromwell Place, London. Our LA-based office handles US and international affairs.
