The Showroom

This series of gouaches overlaid on top of original stencils from 2019 are new logos collected by Dossos during her research throughout 2020 looking at the similarity of visual language between Prevent and the Covid-19 pandemic.

The two share symbols of protection and care, but also threat, vigilance and resistance to contamination.  Some of the visual languages of Covid is shared with that of the anti-terrorism law, and the work explores the crossovers between these rhetorical approaches.

Employing stencils created for the production and installation of her solo exhibition There Is No Alternative at The Showroom in 2019. The project, Khan-Dossos’ first in a UK public institution, featured her on-going research into the complex context of the UK government’s development of pre-crime and surveillance policies, in particular Prevent, questioning the politics of representation and the positioning of care that the strategies around those policies generate. The stencils are based on the logos used to represent the Prevent policy across the UK.

About the Hosts

The Showroom

The Showroom

The Showroom was established in 1983 and in 2013 celebrated thirty years of supporting artists to stage their first solo shows in London and its role as a pivotal force in the development of contemporary art practice.

The programme focuses on collaborative and process-driven approaches to production be that art work, exhibitions, events, discussions, publications, knowledge and relationships. Through major commissions and smaller projects they work with artists and other practitioners who have not previously had significant exposure in London, often introducing international artists to London, and working in partnership with other individuals and organisations within our networks, both at home and abroad.
