A dual presentation of works from painter Alain Joséphine and sculptor Niyi Olagunju, exploring the power and conflict between natural elements, environmental structures and notions of value.

Architecture of Tropical Spaces presents a collection of vibrant abstract paintings by Martinique-based artist Alain Joséphine. The large acrylic-on-canvas works contrast light, shade and flights of colour that celebrate the topography of the island’s landscape, while positioning life in a tropical environment as a daily confrontation with the power of nature.

Showing alongside Joséphine’s paintings are sculptures from the Baga Nimba series by Nigerian British artist Niyi Olagunju, a collection that explores the cultural legacies of African artefacts within the global art market. Halves of vertically bisected Guinean Nimba sculptures are cast in metal and reconnected; through this separation and repurposing of form, Olagunju places intended tribal function alongside monetary value based on Western ideas of provenance and rarity.

New events and exhibitions

With climate change an ever-increasing societal priority; this show comes together at a time when we are all assessing our impact on the world around us. It is a joy to exhibit works that can both confront misuse of the naturally sacred, and postulate an undefeatable strength in the natural world.
