Why Hazel?
Actress and painter, Lady Hazel Lavery, was the wife of portrait painter, Sir John Lavery, and they are two of Cromwell Place’s most famous historical residents. The interior style of The Hazel Bar & Kitchen reflects the Laverys’ own aesthetic and the palette of Sir John’s artworks, such as in his painting, The Artist's Studio: Lady Hazel Lavery with her Daughter Alice and Stepdaughter Eileen. Lady Hazel also hosted many dinners and soirées at Cromwell Place; legendary hostess to a raft of notable and influential figures.
The Artist's Studio by John Lavery
John Lavery and his wife Hazel were well known in exclusive social circles in London during the 1910s. As such, they had contact with some of the most powerful figures in early twentieth-century Britain, including Winston Churchill.
