About Boat House, 1961
The founder of the Hong Kong’s New Ink Movement Lui Shou-Kwan (1919–1975, b. in Guangzhou, China) nurtured countless Hong Kong inkpainters, including Irene Chou, Kan Tai-Keung, and Wucius Wong, whosework are also on show; and exerted a profound influence on thedevelopment of con-temporary Chinese ink art.
Through the exhibited work, Boat House, we can trace Lui’s extraordinarypainting technique of describing a portrait of Hong Kong fishing village in1960s, as well as the literati spirit of carrying forward the traditional inkpainting. Boat House has been exhibited in his solo exhibitions at Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, United Kingdom in 1962 and at New Metropole Arts Centre, United Kingdom in 1964. In addition, Lui’spaintings are currently on view at Art Institute of Chicago until 2 July.
