Architecture of Tropical Spaces presents a collection of vibrant abstract paintings by Martinique-based artist Alain Joséphine. The large acrylic-on-canvas works contrast light, shade and flights of colour that celebrate the topography of the island’s landscape, while positioning life in a tropical environment as a daily confrontation with the power of nature.
Showing alongside Joséphine’s paintings are sculptures from the Baga Nimba series by Nigerian British artist Niyi Olagunju, a collection that explores the cultural legacies of African artefacts within the global art market. Halves of vertically bisected Guinean Nimba sculptures are cast in metal and reconnected; through this separation and repurposing of form, Olagunju places intended tribal function alongside monetary value based on Western ideas of provenance and rarity.
